Workplace Diversity to me was limited to gender. I learnt about neurodiversity something unheard of in school, engineering days or at the workplace. I got discussing this with others. I realized the strengths they come with and how inclusive workplaces would not just benefit them but more importantly benefit us.

I realized neurodiversity was only a variation in the thinking pattern of the brain. I could relate to so many neurodivergent traits like keeping my workstation neat and orderly. When such traits are in us, we find them 'normal' and yet when we see it in some others we give labels and they become 'not normal'.

I did not have enough clarity on the subject – Neurodiversity. All I knew was from serials like “Good Doctor”. The program was an eye opener. Listening to people sharing their lived experiences taught me a lot. For the first time was able to relate to the difficulties they experience. For the first time I understood that a “happy” scenario for me may not be happy for them.

I always knew I was different in certain ways from most others. I’ve been a top performer and yet perfectionism has been a constant anxiety. Today I realized I was not alone. There were many who felt the same – scared and anxious and that was comforting. For the first time I am being able to be open about this.

Realized that certain things that we tend to otherwise overlook could matter so much. Time commitments and clear communication ensuring no ambiguity was essential not just for them, but for me as well as for our project.

Although I had supported special kids at Vibgyor school, my empathy was limited to their learning. I had never imagined employment possibilities for them. This program made me realize that they had every right to be employed and we needed to build those inclusive workplaces.

As an intern I was upfront and proactive. I used to approach my buddy and mentor each day with a good morning, asking for updates and offering help. I expected the same from the new ND team member. It was an eye opener for me that each person is unique and that needs to be respected. Person remotely working and not being upfront is a style different from mine. I have now started viewing situations from others’ perspectives, not just mine.

I had been able to build a bond with the ND team member. He was able to comprehend the project requirement and the team’s expectations. He was also very eager to learn and committed to deliver. In fact there was a time when he had reached out to me and I was unable to give him time as I was traveling.

Integration workshop – A project to me meant delegation, giving instructions and seeing that it gets done. The workshop made me realize a good project ensures feedback. A 2 way feedback both to the new team member as well as for myself and my team.
